Apple pulls WhatsApp and Threads from App Store in China

staticwire | April 19, 2024

In a surprising move, Apple has announced that it has removed Meta’s popular WhatsApp messaging app and Threads social media app from the App Store in China. The removal of these apps came after Chinese authorities cited unspecified national security concerns.

This development comes amidst heightened tensions between the United States and China over issues such as trade, technology, and national security. The U.S. has previously threatened to ban TikTok, another popular app owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance, over similar national security concerns.

It is important to note that while WhatsApp and Threads are not commonly used in China, the messaging app WeChat, owned by Chinese company Tencent, is the dominant platform for communication in the country. Despite the removal of these Meta apps, other apps under the Meta umbrella such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger remain available for download.

According to a statement from Apple, the Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of WhatsApp and Threads from the App Store based on their national security concerns. Apple emphasized that they are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where they operate, even if they may disagree with them.

This move by Apple is significant as the tech giant has recently faced challenges in China, one of its top three markets. Sales of Apple devices in China have reportedly slumped after government agencies and employees of state-owned companies were instructed not to bring Apple products to work.

In response to the shifting landscape, Apple has been diversifying its manufacturing bases outside of China. CEO Tim Cook has been actively engaging with Southeast Asian countries, with recent visits to Hanoi, Jakarta, and Singapore. During his visit to Singapore, Cook met with Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss Apple’s commitment to doing business in the country and announced plans to invest over $250 million to expand its campus.

Earlier in the week, Cook also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi, where he pledged to increase spending on Vietnamese suppliers. Additionally, Cook had a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, where they discussed Widodo’s desire to promote manufacturing in Indonesia.

Overall, Apple’s decision to comply with Chinese authorities and remove Meta’s WhatsApp and Threads apps from the App Store underscores the challenges faced by tech companies operating in a geopolitically complex environment. With ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China, the tech industry is likely to continue navigating regulatory and security concerns as they strive to maintain global operations and market presence.
